Did you see anything or do you have any information?

Sometime between Thursday 22 April – Sunday 25th 2010, the traditional Dorset County roadside signpost at Swyre Cross on the Coast Road (B3157) – with the three arms pointing out the directions and mileages to the local villages and to Bridport and Weymouth – was vandalised. Two of the three arms of this ‘fingerpost’ were forcibly wrenched off and left on the ground below. Bridport Police are investigating this and, if you have any information, please contact our community police officer PC Sarah Corrin at Bridport Police (Tel. 01305 226930 or e-mail sarah.corrin@dorset.pnn.police.uk .)

This sort of localised vandalism has not re-occurred since signposts at either end of Hazel Lane and at the northern end of Rectory Lane were targeted over two years ago. Our Parish Council have logged numerous requests since then with Dorset County Council’s Highways Department for the signs to be replaced and/or refurbished – but all we have succeeded in so far is promises! The Parish Council will keep pursuing DCC vigorously.

In the meantime we have a promise that the Swyre signpost will be refurbished from Coast Road Safety Improvements budgets (for further information on this contact Andrew Brown, DCC Highways Project Manager for Coast Road Improvements by e-mail on A.Brown@dorsetcc.gov.uk .) These traditional fingerposts are very much part of the ‘natural landscape’ of our rural community and need to be jealously protected!
